Creating Project Life cards – tips and tricks

Hi, It’s Carrie here to share with you some tips and tricks for creating swappable cards that anyone can make and would be happy to receive.

First off,  You need some basic tools.

12″ trimmer.  This is key to making clean exact cuts on your paper and cardstock.  No one wants jagged or uneven cards in their albums.  The gird on the trimmer helps you cut a straight even line.  In our group we usually create 3×4 or 4×6 sized cards.  I like to have a smaller trimmer on had also for cutting my cards down slightly for matting. ( more about matting later )

You also need a sharp pair of precision tipped scissors.  I do a lot of fussy cutting in my creating a a sharp pair of scissors is key.

Lets talk adhesive.  I use several types of adhesive for different needs when creating my cards. A tape runner filled with a strong adhesive is key when layering paper and cardstock. ( I use the Glue Glidder Pro )  You want your cards to stay together in transit.  I also like a dot runner.  This adhesive comes in tiny dots of stickiness and is great for layering also.  Glue dots are good for adhering embellishments like enamel dots, die cuts, flowers, ect. I also use liquid glue for small detailed diecuts or hard to attach items that need fine detail.  Lastly I love my 3D foam squares for adding dimension to my cards.

IMG_1292 IMG_1293

Now let discuss paper.  A nice heavier weight card stock and some pretty printed paper are a must when creating your own PL cards.  You can pick up paper stacks on sale all the time at the big box craft retailers. I have also found some at Target and Walmart.

IMG_1295

I choose 1 sheet of card stock and 2 sheets of patterened paper for this demo.  I cut each sheet down to 4″ x 12″, and then trimmed them to 4×6″ and 3×4″ to start in the creation of my cards.

IMG_1296 IMG_1297

First I started by trimming each floral printed paper sheet 1/4″ to create a double matted card.

IMG_1299

One card I choose to ink the edges with some brown ink.  I really like to look of an inked edge on my cards.  It adds visual interest without a lot of extra work.  There are lots of inks and ways to ink your card.  Whatever works for your is just fine.  You can use an ink dauber or cosmetic sponge.  I like using the Distress inks when inking my edges.

IMG_1300          IMG_1301

Now to start embellishing my card.  I like twine. It is inexpensive and easy to find.  I also like enamel dots for the same reason.  Placing 3 enamel dots in one corner adds interest to my card. The eye likes to rest in groups of 3. I always add embellishments in clusters of 3.

IMG_1302 IMG_1303

Now on to my sentiment.  I chose a small stamp that I stamped onto white card stock then cut a flag notch in one end.  I attached it to my card using the 3D foam squares.  One card done.

IMG_1305 IMG_1306

For this 3×4 card I am showing it without any inked edges. I still double matted the card but to embellish I added 3 pieces of chipboard. Simple, clean, pretty.   This card, while being simple still meets the rule of 3 for swapping.  The rule of three is simple.  The 3  can include layers, embellishments or techniques when creating a card for swapping.  I have 2 layers of paper and 3 embellishments.  Since all my embellishments are clustered in one group I would only count this as 1.  If I just placed the 3 chipboard pieces onto a single layer of paper and that was it, it would not meet the swapping guideline.  Now if I inked the edges of that printed piece and added some glitter along with my chipboard that would meet the guideline.

IMG_1307

For this 4×6″ card I double matted the floral pattern onto the dark pink card stock. I decided to add 2 flags and tie some twine at the top, layering under one flag that is attached with 3D foam tape for dimension.  All the edges on this card are also inked.

IMG_1308 IMG_1309

To embellish this card I fussy cut 2 flowers from my extra paper scraps, I inked the edges of the flowers and attached them with 3D foam squares.

IMG_1310 IMG_1311

To finish this off, I added 3 sequins along with my flowers to the bottom corner of my card.

IMG_1313

Now to make a journal card.  I used 3 layers to add interest to my design.  Just using one layer on a journal card is kinda boring and does not meet the rule of 3 for swapping.  Just by adding the grid card to the bright pink cardstock and layering onto the green polka dot paper elevates the design.  Again I inked all the edges.  To embellish I added another fussy cut flower, some twine and enamel dots, clustered in a group of 3.

IMG_1315 IMG_1316

So in a matter of an hour or so I have created 4 cards that meet the swapping guidelines. Any one of these designs can be adapted for swapping in lots of different swap them just by changing the paper and embellishments.

August Honor Roll Winner

Hello Swappers!!!

This month our random winner from all of our wonderful Honor Roll nominees is:

Amy spangler Stahl

FOMFT HRAmy’s beautiful and fun card for a Few of My Favorite Things swap is what put her in for the nomination.

I asked Amy to tell us a little about herself and how she got her inspiration for this beautiful card.

I am a wife to my wonderful husband for MANY moons and a mother of 3 and 2 fur-babies. Started scrap booking a looooong time ago to preserve memories of my children. I have taught and worked at 2 different local scrapbook stores and in the past 5 years started doing Project Life. Project Life fits my life because I love taking odd photos (shoe shots/ food / etc) and often times find I have simply 1 photo of something I would like to scrap. As for my PL cards I create…I am one that doesn’t do much with digital at this point as I am one who LOVES texture. To feel the dimension and touch the items with my hands. Crafting with my hands helps me to de-stress and relax. I have enjoyed the PLCS group for about a year now, and have found the ladies to be inspirational and helpful.

Thank you Amy for sharing  a little about yourself and your creative process with us.

If you would like to be considered for a Honor Roll nomination all you need to do is be sure that your cards are received by your hostess by the due date and that your cards meet the 3 techniques/layering guidelines.

Each month the Honor Roll winner will get to host a swap for the next months swaps. The swap theme will be the choice of the winner.  We look forward to seeing what Amy comes up with.

Have a great week!!

Mixed Media Fall swap cards

Hi Carrie here to share with you today a couple of Mixed Media project life cards that I created.  These are for September swaps. with Hostess Brittany Ross.

I love the look of Mixed media Art projects.  I do not create a lot of MM on a regular basis due to the mess and time involved in creating such cards.  I am really happy with the results of this project and I hope my fellow swappers like them just as much.

I used this beautiful fall paper by Bazzill Basics for this project.  I really like this pad of 6×6 paper because it is double sided so you get lots of options.

To create the background on my cards I tore strip of paper from several different patterns, I inked all the edges in Ground Espresso Distress ink   and using my Tombow liquid adhesive I glued the pieces, layered on top of each other onto a 4×6″ sheet of Kraft cardstock.

Once all my edges were sealed to the cardstock I cut the 4×6 in half leaving me with 2 – 3×4 layered cards.  I then edged the cards with Liquid Leaf paint in Renaissance Gold.  I just wanted to add a touch of something special to my cards and this Liquid Leaf was just the ticket.

Next I created my cute little pumpkin.

To create the pumpkin, I punched three 1 1/2″ circles in two different patterns and the stem from corrugated paper.  I inked all the edges then layered them together.

To created the bird for my other card I used a CTMH stamp and stamped it onto Kraft cardstock then fussy cut around the image. I fussy cut the wing from a different patterned paper and attached it using a 3D foam square. This added some dimension to my bird.

Here is a close up look at both finished cards.  I added a burlap square behind the pumpkin and a brass paperclip with hanging tag to both cards.

Thanks for stopping by today.  I hope this post inspires you to get a little messy and try something new.

Happy Fall Y’all

Carrie

August Kitspiration/September Swap

Good evening,  I hope that everyone is having a fantastic end to their summer. As you may have noticed, a trend  is developing. Each month, I am working with a kit and then the following month, everyone is invited to join along in a swap with that Kit. This month I am playing with Cinnamon. I like this kit because of the neutral colors and the birds. I really like the little birds. Tweet! Here are some cards from that kit to give you an idea. Kerri Bradford did a wonderful job making a beautiful kit.
pl-closeup-titles2(pp_w704_h545)

This kits allows you to customize things using the PLCS September  color pallet, that is going to be the inspiration for so many fantastic cards next month.

11168883_10207571619397416_6139391488213010434_n

Let’s take a look at what I was able to come up with in a small amount of time, with a little amount of supplies.

None of these cards are overly complicated, but each one has a little more dimension and interest. But wait there is more….

I also played around with some coordinating paper I found. I liked the scroll pattern and felt that it played off the neutrals in the original kit. What do you think?

I could’t just leave things at that, cork needed to be added to the party. Additionally, I had fun with florals this month, maybe I just want to hang onto summer a little longer.

Finally, I waned to address whether or not you need to have the actual kit to join the swap. The answer is no. In fact, this is a great way to get a set of cards with the same feel of a kit, but not have to commit to 616 cards. I wanted to demonstrate this with my personal swap card this month. I made it from items that are not in the kit, but are inspired by the kit. Notice my little bird. I told you I liked them.

I hope this helps inspire you to remake some cards in your own kits or to join September’s Cinnamon swap. There are going to be some pretty fantastic cards in there.

Fun Friday – Turning Swap cards into Greeting cards

Happy Friday!   Today I would like to share how I turn some of my swap cards into greeting cards.   Everyone enjoys a beautiful handmade card.  Why not share the art from our fellow swappers and make some quick and easy cards out of swap cards you have on hand. Most of the work is already done for you.

Here are three Swap cards that I turned into Greeting cards.

IMG_8641

For this card I started with a Twinchie ( 2″ square ) card that I created for a spring swap.  I used several layers of pattern paper to layer the card, I then stamped my “Happy Day” sentiment and embellished with enamel dots, twine and washi tape.  This is the most detailed of the cards I created.

IMG_8640

For my next card,  I used a swap card created by Tabitha. I double matted the original 3×4 card onto red card stock and then mounted it to my pre made card base ( I love to pick up these pre made cards in pretty colors whenever I find them on sale or clearance. ) Tabitha already did all the hard, beautiful work for this card, I just added the base.

IMG_8637

For my last card I used a Rolo swap card ( no name on back or I would give credit ) This card was from the Monochromatic white swap.  I just dabbed on a bit of pink ink to the flowers to make them pop.  I made this one into a pocket card by mounting the rolo at the bottom of my pre made card base with 3D foam tape.  I then Stamped Happy Birthday to the top. To embellish my card I wrapped some twine around the punched out holes at the bottom of the rolo and added a couple of enamel dots.

So please share in the Facebook Group any Greeting cards that you have created from your swap cards.

Happy Swapping!

Carrie

Fun Friday – Happy National Mutt Day

11214254_952935924769466_7187682431658556052_n

In honor of national Mutt day I am hosting a challenge/giveaway for Fun Friday.  Post a photo and short story about your furbaby Mutt, rescued or adopted.  So many sweet furbabies wait in shelters for a furever home.  For every photo or story shared I will also make a $1.00 donation to my local shelter.  I will keep this challenge open until Friday August. 7th.  I will then randomly select one story/photo to win a Doggy Surprise package ( including a treat for your furbaby ) Share your stories and lets raise some money to help those sweet Mutts in need.  There is also a Facebook group – https://www.facebook.com/NationalMuttDay  honoring this special day. Check out their page and see all the adorable photos posted by other Mutt lovers.

Thanks for playing along with us at PLCS.
